Kara Ross is the founder of the eponymous accessory brand Kara Ross NY that includes a wide variety of exciting designs in jewelry, handbags, belts, and adorned gemstones with exotic skins. Launched in 2003, Kara Ross NY has been steadily growing up the ladder in the fashion world ever since.
Since last year, the Kara Ross NY collections have become synonymous with some of the top-named stars, such as Jennifer Lopez, Hilary Swank, Selma Blair, and many more. Her famed designs have even reached as far as the White House, making first lady Michelle Obama one of her fans.
As a designer, Ross loves to explore flea markets for her inspiration, but she also loves art and antique shows. In her spare time, she enjoys a good book and movie. She loved “The King’s Speech” and feels very strongly about its Oscar success.
Putting many miles into a year, Ross travels all over the world to introduce her designs and collections at trunk shows and events. If you sit next to her on a plane, she always has her notebook open at the ready for when her brain feeds her creative thoughts with a new concept for a ring, handbag, or necklace.
Ross and her brand have come a long way in a few short years. Michelle Obama first picked up designs by Kara Ross NY while receiving the White House Christmas tree. Since then, the first lady has been spotted wearing Kara’s designs many times, including on the night of the State of Union address by President Obama. The earrings and bracelets worn by Michelle Obama on that night were from Kara Ross NY’s Gemstone collection.
Ross’s relationship with the Oval Office began in 2010 when she was given an unexpected assignment. The Office of the Chief of Protocol, the bureau that helps organize ceremonies for the president, understood that Ross created jewelry that was crafted with wood and other organic materials. They wanted to have some designs made by an American artist for Michelle Obama to offer as gifts to visiting heads of state.
Ross created special pieces from wood that was given to her from the White House Lawn. Each piece had an inscription the read “Designed Exclusively for Michelle Obama by Kara Ross.” Ross was certainly overjoyed and thrilled with this happening in her career.
Ross has stretched herself into an area that is another love of hers—handbags. The hardware is crafted in Florence, Italy, and uses gold, silver, and gunmetal to frame handcrafted semiprecious stones that are then applied to the clutches and the shoulder bags that are on the A-list of fashion merchandise.
